Historical Flags of Greece
Of all the different flags of Europe, the Greek flag is very much one of my favorites. Like other international flags, this particular one is also referred to at times as the “blue-white.” The flag displays nine equally sized horizontal bands or stripes, alternating in color with the colors being blue and white. Also, a white cross is displayed in the canton section of the flag, which is in the upper left corner. Truly, the flag of Greece displays wonderfully from steel flagpoles of all kinds.
Like other flags of different countries in the world, different meaning is said to represent the various elements on the national Greek flag. For example, the horizontal bands (that alternate in the colors blue and white) represent the nine syllables of freedom or death in Greek. However, others claim that the horizontal stripes represent all the letters of freedom in the respective language.
In terms of short-term economic development Greece has suffered the effects of the economic crisis substantially. By the end of the year 2009, and as a result of both international and local factors, Greece’s economy faced its most severe crisis in more than 25 years. Interestingly, during 2010 it came to light that successive Greek governments had been found to have deliberately misinformed the country’s economic statistics.
Like other flags of Europe, some controversy remains in existence with regards to the flag’s history, especially about the flag’s pattern. Fascinatingly, the colors as well as the design of the arrangement of the stripes are said to go back all the way to historical times.
Some 200 years ago, a so called Provisional Government, determined by law the exact pattern of the Greek flag with its respective variations (land, navy and merchant variations), which includes the white cross on a blue background, the alternating colored bands, etc. Today, this beautiful flag has been displayed for nearly 200 years and is considered one of the more popular designs in comparison to other national flags.
