Buying a Drum Kit
When looking to purchase a drum kit there are lots of things to consider – there are three levels of drum kit and most drum manufacturers make them.
Beginning with an entry level kit which are fairly cheap and not very well made – these kind of kits will come complete with all hardware, pedals, cymbals stands, tom clamps etc and also cymbals which won’t sound very good and will easily split.
Mid-Range kits are around double the cost of an entry level kit and don’t come with any cymbals, they do have the hardware which will be much higher quality – these kits will last for years.
Top-End kits can cost thousand and won’t come with anything except the drum shells, people who buy these kind of kits are generally experienced drummers who will want certain types of snare drum and cymbals so they would buy these separately.
Drum kits can be ordered with different size drums, a child should have a smaller bass drum which will mean the toms are also lower, a very tall person could have a 22″ or 24″ bass drums as he or she would easily reach the pedals.
When we play drums we don’t actually hit the drums, unless we want to, we simply hit drum skins and use natural rebound – so choosing good drum skins is very important to obtain the sound we want.
Dampening the drum kit will also help – putting any material which will absorb high end frequencies in the bass drum to get a great sound, then working backwards to the first tom to have the kit tuned.
