Chiropractors and The Dispute from The Mainstream

Like other forms of alternative medicine, chiropractic also had its share of controversies amid the resistance from the mainstream medicine.

Although currently licensed and well established in Australia, United States, and Canada, chiropractic has fought against mainstream medicine throughout the most part of its existence.

The American Medical Association rejected chiropractic until 1987 calling the practice as an “unscientific cult” stressing that chiropractors’ idea on subluxation is not based on science.

Several medical groups have conducted their own researches and studies on chiropractic treatments and came up with conflicting results that indicated that spinal manipulation was not effective.

Chiropractors’ motivation dwelled on spiritual inspiration, vitalism and rationalism, a philosophy that sets them apart from mainstream medicine and later on paved way for chiropractors to be accepted as an independent profession.

This same philosophy helped “straight” chiropractors to reject the logic of scientific method and focused instead on the principles of vitalism than on scientific cupidity.

However, some practitioners believed in scientific research and its importance to chiropractic, they are known as the “mixers” who combine the principles of chiropractic care to mainstream medicine.

Despite that conflict within chiropractic physicians themselves, they still share the same conviction that the spine plays a major role in the well-being of a person. Chiropractors specialize on the structure and function of the spinal column, its biomechanics and its relation to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems as well as its role in the natural restoration of health.

The vitalism principle of chiropractors that considers vertebral subluxation or a dysfunction in the spinal joint to disrupt the innate intelligence of the body, thereby causing illnesses, has been the center of ridicule from mainstream medical physicians.

Most chiropractors reject the categorization of chiropractic as an alternative medicine holding on to a firm belief that chiropractic is an independent profession that focuses on the treatment and prevention of disorders related to the musculoskeletal system.

Chiropractic was founded by David D. Palmer in the 1890s when he performed a spinal adjustment and successfully restored the hearing of a janitor. His son BJ Palmer helped expand the medical practice in the 20th century.

Although battled with controversies over the years, nowadays more and more people have acknowledged the benefits of chiropractic care in healing a wide range of ailments, aside from common back pains.

Chiropractic has been proven beneficial for kids, pregnant women, and as a cure for asthma, among others. It has also been proven safe when administered by chiropractic professionals, which runs contrary to claims from the mainstream medicine that chiropractic could cause more injury than cure.
