Lighting emergency can help first responders and emergency service personnel stay safe.

As someone who walks most of the time, all I seem to hear is sirens and see the flashing lighting emergency lights of ambulances, fire trucks and police vehicles.

Seeing the flashing lighting emergency type lights on first response vehicles seems to be happening more and more on our roads and city streets. lighting emergency situations isn’t just when there has been an accident or incident it is needed at many other times. Often police vehicles will use their emergency lights to illuminate a scene, highlight an area or even a person or group of people. Other vehicles like heavy plant machinery, utility, municipal and construction vehicles need lighting for emergency situations or warning. Emergency lighting is needed in many places and we do see it in our work places and in our homes as well.

Sadly we need lighting emergency for situations beyond our control such as when a fire alarm is activated where we work. The lighting used in such situations can be LED lights embedded into the floor to as guidance to exits, with strobe lights to show the alarm is activated. Many of the same types of lights are used on first response vehicles but obviously the shape and form they take is different. The lightbars used for lighting emergency vehicles are very sophisticated pieces of kit and they perform multiple different uses. Traffic advisors, take down lights, strobe lights and ally lights can all be incorporated into lightbars used by police vehicles.

It is fare to say that lighting emergency vehicles is really important if not crucial. Without the high visibility that lighting gives emergency vehicles they would be in a much more precarious situation on our roads whilst trying to navigate through traffic. Bad light, night driving and bright sunlight can all mean lights are not seen and that is why you will see lighting emergency vehicles with many different variations of light like strobe and LED lightbars. The number of vehicles on our road network increases daily and with that comes increased danger for all drivers. Road traffic accidents are all too common and are caused often by careless driving in over congested roads.

The need for emergency vehicles to be seen and heard increases as does the number of road users. Very busy highways will have tailbacks of traffic and an emergency vehicle trying to navigate through that will find it extremely difficult. Even with the brightest light and loudest siren cutting through that kind of traffic nearly impossible. lighting emergency vehicles is crucial especially if they are in attendance at a roadside incident. The scene needs to have the lighting just right or it can prove disastrous. The sight of flashing beacons and lightbars ahead is always an indication something is very wrong.

One of the difficulties faced by our first responders is getting the level of lighting emergency situations at roadside just right. Too much powerful light can prove to be a bad distraction for other road users and can actually have them drift towards the accident rather than steer away from it. Emergency situations demand care and attention of all concerned and that includes us the public. Staying safe and maintaining safety should always be uppermost in our minds not just for us but others including those vulnerable first responders at the side of the road.
