Tips on how to import video from Photo Booth to iMovie
“Is there a way to export a video from photobooth to iphoto or imovie in order to edit it and then e-mail or post it online? I recorded a rehearsal recently and need to be able to work with it and then make it available for the cast to see.” from Yahoo Answer.
I found there are still a lot of people have problem in importing Photo booth videos into iMovie: can’t get photo booth MOV into iMovie or iMovie crashed when loading MOV into iMovie.
First, let’s have a brief introduction about Photo Booth.
Photo Booth, the free program from Apple included on every Mac, includes the ability to not only shoot stills but to capture video as well. Photo Booth consists of a single window containing a large viewer which provides a preview when taking photo snapshots or video clips. Thumbnails of saved photos and videos are displayed along the bottom of the window. These can be shown or played by double clicking on the thumbnails. There are also backdrops to go along with the setting or video you are doing. For some reason though, Apple didn’t include a button to share this video with iMovie.
The possible reasons for the failure in transferring Photo Booth to iMovie
Reason one: Advanced settings problem
If you change the Advanced Importing preferences in iPhoto so that the checkbox labeled “Copy items to the iPhoto Library” is deselected, movies you import into iPhoto after that change will not appear in iMovie.
Note: This issue only occurs with referenced movies that are imported to iPhoto while using iMovie ’09 (version 8.0.5). Referenced movies which have been imported into iPhoto and accessed in iMovie prior to iMovie ’09 (version 8.0.5), will still appear in iMovie ’09 (version 8.0.5)
To resolve this issue, select the checkbox for “Copy items to the iPhoto Library” in the iPhoto preferences pane:
1. Open iPhoto.
2. Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Select the checkbox for “Copy Items to the iPhoto Library.”
If you have already imported movies into iPhoto which are not visible in iMovie ’09 (version 8.0.5), you will need to re-import your movie back into iPhoto after following the steps above.

Reason two: Non-compatible video formats
Not all video formats are accepted by iMovie ’09 (version 8.0.5), which reads videos well in MP4, MOV, DV, MPEG-1, 3GP, M4V, and MP3, WAV, AIFF audio files. Non-supported video formats including: AVI, WMV, MPEG-2, VOB, MKV, FLV, SWF, RM, RMVB, MOD, TOD and high definition video files like AVCHD, MTS, M2TS, TS, TP, TRP, etc.
If you’d like to make iPhoto movies workable in iMovie ’09 (version 8.0.5), it’s necessary to convert the videos format first. Here introduce a program for you-Photo booth to iMovie converting program, which enables you to convert photo booth video to DV for importing movie/video from photo booth to iMovie and add photo booth to iMovie at super high speed. Besides, photo booth video to iMovie enables you to convert photo booth video to other popular formats like MP4, AVI, FLV, RM, RMVB, etc on Mac (snow leopard).
Supposed you would like to upload the Photo booth video to your personal blog, i think converting the video to flash video format would be a right choice, for the flash video is always in small size. Maybe another program: video to flash converter for mac can help you to achieve it for it can easily convert photobooth video to flash swf or flv. Plus, it can create flash players with control bar. Without any programming required and publish DVD movies with amazing flash player to website in marvellous way in a few minutes.
