China Imports That Are Tainted
The types of China imports that are tainted include mushrooms that are laced with pesticides, sardines and scallops that are coated with putrefying bacteria, frozen catfish that have antibiotics that have been banned, and dried apples that have been preserved with a chemical that causes cancer.
Along with over 1,000 shipments of Chinese counterfeit Chinese medicines, Chinese cosmetics that are toxic, and Chinese dietary supplements that were tainted, these were some of the 107 food imports from China that the Food and Drug Administration detained at ports in the United States that have been revealed by agency documents.
It has been determined by inspection records in the United States that for years, China has been sending foods to the US that are unfit for human consumption. Inspectors from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) have just returned the tainted food that the importers in Chinese importers were caught with much of which again found its way to the borders of the United States trying to make a second or third attempt at entry.
Two events have resulted in the members of Congress and activists demanding that the U.S. to inform China that enough is enough. These two events were the resumption of the high level trade and economic talks with china and the highly publicized contamination of the United States fish, pork, and chicken that was tainted with Chinese pet food ingredients.
The policy experts believe that such a change won’t be easy in spite of tainted food and dead pets. The reason that change will be largely difficult is because the companies in the United States have come to depend on the economy in China and that stricter import rules might hurt the economy in the United States as well.
The former assistant to the United States trade representative and the current director of international trade has determined that there are so many companies in the Unites States that are indirectly or directly involved with China these days that the commercial interests of the U.S. has permitted imports to come in as smoothly and as quickly as possible. This has resulted in the U.S. not doing much to stop China from sending the consumers in the US mislabeled and adulterated food.
A former assistant secretary of agriculture says that it’s more than simply about imports that are inexpensive. The food processors and the farmers in the U.S. have wanted to sell their food to such a large market for years. The Chinese have a piracy problem that is serious. However, the U.S. puts up with it since the U.S. wants to sell to them.
The agricultural exports from the United States to China have grown to over $5,000,000,000 per a year which is a fraction of the recent $232,000,000,000 trade deficit that the United States has with China. However, these numbers have a growth potential that is huge with the economy in China having over 1,000,000,000 consumers and a 10% rate of growth.
Obviously, there are risks associated with trading with a Chinese marketplace that is largely unregulated. There have been many lawsuits that the pet food companies in the United States now face from consumers who are angry because their pets were poisoned by Chinese ingredients that were tainted. However, up until recently, the federal government and many companies believed that those risks were worth taking everything considered. It seems that they had very little choice for some products because due to the much less expensive prices in China, its competitors have been driven out of business.
