What Society Require To Recognize About Prince William and Kate Middleton Wedding

The royal wedding is all around. It has settle up its way onto biscuit tins, tea towels, CDs, T-shirts, even jelly beans. Above all, it has claimed plain dominion over our last frontier: the internet. Since Prince William and Kate Middleton stated their pledge to marry on November 16, 2010, internet searchers have crack a new obsession, and it is nearing a fever pitch.

Or so one would think. Despite the near-constant media focus on the happy couple since November last year, plenty of people have asked if Britain actually cares about the big day. Applications for street parties were not as high as expected (however, anti-royalist celebrations will help make up the numbers) and commentary on social networking sites features wedding fanatics and detractors in equal measure. And in terms of real numbers, Justin Bieber is still more popular than William and Kate.

Search tools paint a different picture. Google’s Insights for Search allows users to compare the popularity of specific search terms; this chart gives a sense of how the royal wedding’s stars have fared on Google. Before they announced their engagement, Kate Middleton and Prince William enjoyed fairly little search traffic, in keeping with their press coverage – Prince William is obviously a more regular point of interest, but Kate Middleton normally appeared in the media only once or twice a year.

The term ‘royal wedding’ was even more rarely searched, aside from two blips in 2004 and 2005, no doubt from wedding bell rumours (since the last royal wedding took place before the internet existed, we can’t make any better comparisons). Along with the Prince and his bride, a number of other terms have crept onto the web search radar. Kate Middleton’s ring, dress, interviews and parents became instant Google hits. Web traffic also surged around Prince Harry and Diana, Princess of Wales. William’s fianc?e, though, definitely stole the spotlight; search queries for Kate Middleton increased 30-fold overnight. She is now the most popular Kate on the web.
