Ear Muffs – Communicate Effectively in High Noise Environments
OSHA makes it mandatory for people working in high noise environments to be provided with hearing protection devices to protect them from noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). With today’s advanced electronic devices, passive protection could be improved upon by such noise-canceling circuitry in hearing protection devices (HPDs), especially for earmuffs. People who work in high noise areas, like airports, rigs, factories and around loud music, are more susceptible to hearing loss, or tinnitus (constant ringing in the ear).
There are three general classes of noise hazard: Impact noise (such as gunshot or explosion); Continuous noise (machinery running constantly); and Intermittent noise (such as a passing heavy vehicle). Traditional hearing protection products serve particular classes of noise, and often a number of hearing protectors have been needed for different noise hazards.
With advancements in technology, there has been a huge improvement in the types of hearing devices available to provide hearing protection as mandated by OSHA. A wide range of earmuffs with different product features and reduced noise levels are available, like traditional earmuffs and electronic earmuffs.
Earmuffs are widely used in areas with construction machinery, airports and industries, mining, military, rigs, etc., where noise levels are very high. Workers count on earmuffs to block noise and manage sound in some of the world’s most acoustically challenging environments.
The present day ear muffs are total high noise communication solutions with which users can communicate face-to-face, at short and long distances via two way radio, Bluetooth cell phone and other communication systems. Most of them deliver 360-degree binaural situational awareness to ensure users have complete awareness of what is happening around them. Earmuffs should be comfortable and fit well or they will not be worn.
Safety professionals must ensure that they follow certain guidelines when selecting these earmuffs. Choose the right earmuffs that will not only improve worker safety and improve regulatory compliance but also improve productivity and worker morale.
