Make way for the Tablet Revolution
This month, the world saw the release of the latest iPad 2, a brand new redesign of last year’s mobile computing phenomenon, the Apple iPad tablet. Since its introduction, the Apple iPad has sold over 15 million units over the course of just 9 months in 2010. Meanwhile, initial stocks of the iPad 2 sold out within the first weekend of launch in Australia with customers queuing up outside of Apple stores hoping to get their hands on the new release.
Mobile technology manufacturers around the world have been working hard to develop their own tablets to compete with the Apple iPad. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas held in January this year, exhibitors demonstrated the tablets that they were looking to launch for 2011. These included the Motorola Xoom, RIM’s Playbook and the new Samsung Galaxy among many others.
More tablets entering the Australian market
Some of the newcomers are yet to announce an Australian release date for their models, including the Xoom, while mobile service provider Telstra is reportedly looking to bring the BlackBerry PlayBook to the Australian market once a 3G and 4G model are released.
Meanwhile, Australians looking to purchase a tablet can of course choose between the iPad and the Samsung Galaxy, but there are also a number of other key manufacturers in the market. The Australian based Pioneer Computers has its Android based Dreambook ePad out in the market in both a 7 and 10 inch screen size. Telstra, meanwhile, currently offers its exclusive T-Touch Tab also running an Android operating system and Toshiba’s Libretto offers a dual touch screen for a more full PC experience.
