If you are a safe driver, don’t drive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs you will be unlikely to see police flashing light in your mirrors. However, just being a road user will unfortunately mean you do see flashing police lights on a regular basis. The police are an ever-present feature on our roads and highways and without a doubt, they work tirelessly. Police need to get to places quickly and safely when they are responding to priority calls and the only way they can do this is by using lights and audible warnings to help their passage through traffic.
A crowded traffic snarled highway is a police officer’s worst nightmare when it comes to moving around, so they need a way to get our attention. I have seen drivers virtually ignore and block the passage of police vehicles just because they don’t want to slow down!

Without the police in attendance, many roadside incidents are highly dangerous for the other first response personnel. Medical teams dealing with emergencies often need the back up of the police to maintain safety and security at a scene. Firefighters will also often need the backup of police officers when they are attending an emergency. It’s clear to see why we see so many police flashing light units on our streets and highways.
Police officers swear to protect and serve and that is a very dangerous thing to have to adhere to. Police officers work tirelessly in protecting us and other first response personnel and for that, they should be commended and praised. All too often our police are criticized and that should not be something that ever happens. The job they do is dangerous and often deadly and the police flashing light units they have on their vehicles draw attention to them. Therefore if you see police flashing light in any mirror or on the road ahead, please pay them the courtesy of acting responsibly and cautiously.
