Choosing a Good Domain Name

Do you want your site to be successful? If yes, then choosing a good domain is the first step that you need to take. Unfortunately there are many webmasters who choose domain names without any research. They fail to realize that a poor domain can cause a number of problems. The most important thing is, you must keep the requirements of your site in mind while making a choice.

One can divide domain names into two different types. Each group has some pros and cons. Following is a detailed analysis of both these types.

1. Brandable Domains

These domains are very creative. In some brandable domains two or more words are fused together while in others a new word is formed which has no literal meaning. Some of the most reputed online businesses including search engine giant Google use such domain names. Their success proves the effectiveness of brandable domains.

Pros:

– Such domains are very catchy

– They are quite easier to register than the ones belonging to the other group mentioned below

– It is easy for the visitors to remember such domains

Cons:

– Brandable names have absolutely no SEO value. That’s because URL is one of the main things that Google looks at while ranking a site.

2. Keyword Domains

As the name suggests, a keyword domain is based one or more profitable keywords. In the past these domains consisted of only a few keywords but nowadays long phrases are also being used for this purpose. In order to be successful with this type of domains, you need to do some serious keywords research. Making wild guesses doesn’t work. There are many free research tools that you can use for this purpose. My personal favorite is Google Adwords’ tool. Coming up with the right keywords isn’t as difficult as it sounds. You just have to finding the words which have high search volume and a low number of competing sites.

Pros:

– If used properly, these domains are capable of working wonders for the SE ranking of a site

– Just by looking at the domain, people can find out what’s the site about

Cons:

– The most lucrative keyword domains have already been registered

– Domain flippers purchase high value domains at low costs and then try to sell them at a very high price. Therefore, you might have to pay thousands of dollars for your domain

You should choose one of the above mentioned types by considering the nature of your site. If you are starting a membership site or a portal then a brandable domain would do great. However,if you need traffic from search engines then go for a keyword domain. You should keep in mind that your domain is the first thing that your visitors will see about your site and it’s important that you choose it intelligently.
