Feasting at Festivals the Bucharest Way
There’s no better way to plug into the cultural scene of Bucharest than to wander through some of its enchanting summertime festivals. Long considered the “Paris of the East,” Bucharest vies for the top spot in diversity and enrichment offerings, with an array of arts and contemporary events in the months of July and August.
Staying in a centrally located Bucharest hotel is key to enjoying the activities. While some events are splayed throughout the city, many are located in main squares or within the parameters of a major museum or historic building. Also critical: book Bucharest hotels early as popular festivals bring in a slew of artists and tourists alike.
Not to be missed in 2012 is Bucharest Biennale 5, a nearly two-month long, internationally recognized contemporary arts event held every two years. Set for May 25-July 22 of next year, the festival is planning parallel events, world-class curators, lectures, displays and more throughout the city and even as far-reaching as other parts of Europe.
Also in the beginning of July is B’EstFest, a three-day concert with rock, alternative and metal bands. The event takes place annually in the B’estFest Park, just outside the city limits, and attracts the likes of House of Pain, Moby and Nelly Furtado.
Although on hold for the last couple of years, many anticipate the return of the Bucharest City Challenge, a Grand Prix-style car racing event run through the streets of the capital. Held in July in the past, thousands of spectators have lined the streets to witness Formula racing and competitors from all over Europe. Headquarters previously were at the Bucharest Marriott Hotel, but no official announcements have been made to date.
Whether its wandering the banks of the Dambovita River to admire contemporary art displays or dangling out a Bucharest hotel window as a race car streams by, summertime in Bucharest promises a flurry of activity with its eclectic festivals.
