New kinds of hearing aids and technologies

Gone are the days of clunky, whistling hearing aids that you would only ever see your grandparents wearing. Newer, more advanced forms of hearing technologies are helping people of all ages hear again. Take a look at some of the most advanced technologies being developed and improved these days.

Induction loop technology

Essentially, an audio induction loop is a loop of cable around a certain area, such as a building or room, which generates a magnetic field which can be picked up by a hearing aid. This way, sound is wirelessly transmitted from a microphone, TV, audio player, telephone or any sound system directly to the hearing aid. It’s particularly useful in settings such as churches or other public meetings and broadcasts which take place in the one area.

SoundBite

SoundBite is a revolutionary system designed to allow sound to travel via the teeth, through the bones, to both cochleae, bypassing the middle and outer ear entirely. By using bone conduction via the teeth, SoundBite is intended to restore normal hearing to patients with single sided deafness, conductive or mixed hearing loss, all without surgery. It works in conjunction with a small mouthpiece worn comfortably over a person’s back teeth.

Bone Conduction hearing aid

Also sometimes called bone anchored hearing aids, these kinds of advanced hearing systems are suitable for adults and children with conductive hearing loss (outer or middle ear problems), mixed hearing loss (outer, middle and inner ear problems) or single-sided deafness (total deafness in one ear). These kinds of implants bypass the ear canal completely, and allow the person to hear by stimulating nerves in the inner hear, allowing hearing.
