Carlos Hank Rhon on the Prospects in Investment Banking?
Invest banking happens to be the umbrella term for a host of services such as: selling and trading securities, and underwriting; providing financial advisory services such as acquisition and merger advice; and assets management. These services are offered to individuals, non-profit organizations, governments and companies.
Invest banking action and players still throng the Wall Street and midtown Manhattan in NY. You will also find them in some other money centers around the world, for example San Francisco, Tokyo and London. The struggling economy today has reduced the number of players, but there are still big names involved. Names like JP Morgan Chase, Credit Suisse, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, still are regular visitors to campus career centers.
Investment banking can seem like a place where you can do your deals and make your fortunes. However, this is a world which is intensely competitive, profit-hungry and action oriented. In fact, you should never enter into investment banking for the money alone. The lifestyle is far too much demanding to justify money earning alone. To survive here you will need to like the work itself. You will need to hone your skills of analysis, which will enable you to spot the market trends and the future industry changes. As a research analyst, you will need to be able to read, write, live and breathe the industry that you profess to follow.
Investment banking has a very steep learning curve. However, if you like deal oriented, fast paced work, and are at ease with analysis and numbers, can put your personal life on hold for the sake of your job, and have a tolerance for risk, then investment banking may be the job for you.
In case you are an undergraduate, then you should look for an internship as your starting foothold. If you are a graduate, then aim for the big banks, as they spend more on training. MBAs will do better to try an internship first to get some experience first then use that experience to make a jump to a better position.
