Tackling sports carnivals

Sports carnivals. You either love them or loathe them. They can be the highlight of the school year or a complete nightmare. But with a bit of forward thinking and preparation, carnivals can be a whole lot of fun.

Get involved

If you have the day off, participating in your child’s sports carnival can be a great way to meet other parents and teachers, get to know your kids friends as well as speeding the day up! Schools are always looking for parents who can help out – by timing races, helping out at the marshalling area, handing out ribbons or even helping on the canteen.

What to take

Make sure your kids go through everything they need at least a couple of days before the carnival. This will save the last minute dash to the shops to get a pair of goggles or a new pair of bike shorts. If it is a swimming carnival, make sure you have a spare cap, goggles, two towels and a pair of thongs. If it is an athletics carnival, be sure to pack safety pins, spare socks and some long pants to keep their legs warm. Australian school uniforms for boys and girls usually include a sports outfit so make sure your child is appropriately dressed in exercise clothes. Boys school shorts and girls school dresses may be great in the playground but are not so comfortable to compete in.

Food

Sports carnivals are a special day for your kids, so try and make their lunch special too. Hundreds and thousands sandwiches are great for an energy boost and a couple of jellybeans won’t do any harm. Pop in a couple of pieces of fruit and some biscuits for good measure. If you can, avoid dairy-based products as they are not ideal foods to consume when doing a lot of exercise.

Drinks

The kids should be drinking lots and lots of water on carnival days, to stop them from getting dehydrated and feeling sick. Make sure they have a large drink bottle in their bag so they can drink small amounts throughout the day. Energy drinks like Gatorade and Powerade aren’t really necessary for a school sports carnival but can be given to children as a special treat if you wish.
There are plenty of ways to make sports carnivals enjoyable, stress-free events that you and your children can enjoy. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that they have fun!
