Definition of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is basically a common sleeping syndrome manifested by a decline or suspension of normal breathing process while sleeping. It is most widespread among grown-ups and is a rare occurrence among kids. In most cases these sleep disorders can be easily diagnosed on the basis of an individual’s past medical record; but in certain cases the doctor needs to perform a number of tests in order to prove the analysis. This sleeping disorder can be treated by both nonsurgical and surgical procedure.

Sleep apnea arises when the breathing mechanism gets obstructed or is unusually lessened. In uncomplicated language, sleep apnea crops up when an individual discontinues inhaling and exhaling air for more than 10 seconds. When you suspend breathing totally or inhale not more than 25% of a standard breath for round about 10 seconds, you tend to suffer from apnea. Another common definition of sleep apnea is that when there is nearly a 4% fall in the blood oxygen level, it results in sudden decline in the transmission of oxygen in the blood which in turn hinders normal breathing process.

Apnea generally takes place during slumber. Due to the occurrence of apnea, sleep commonly gets disrupted owing to insufficient breathing and reduction of oxygen concentration in the bloodstream. At times because of sleep apnea an individual wakes up entirely, while at other times the individual emerges from an intense sleep to a lesser intensity of sleep. In most cases apnea is evaluated when the patient is in sleep for more than two-hours. The acuteness of sleep apnea is determined by dividing the number of times apnea occurred with the number of sleeping hours, which helps to get an apnea index; the larger the AI(AI stands for apnea per hour), the more critical is the condition. A healthcare professional should be consulted in such situation.

I am a cured snorer and I have recently reviewed some of the anti snoring devices on the market including the sleep apnea mouthpiece and other less invasive snore aids on the market. Many of them provide good levels on snoring reduction.
