Gifts for a Football Fan – A Few Ideas for When You’re Scratching Your Head
Two number seven shirts. One signed by an Italian, the other worn by a Dane. And both great gifts for a football fan. The first – the Italian – is a national shirt from the 2002 FIFA World Cup that’s been autographed by Allesandro Del Piero. The second is a Luton Town shirt that was worn by striker Lars Elstrup in around 1990. Okay, so there may be some people who think these are rather unusual football gifts, particularly the Lars shirt, but as a Hatters fan, owning a shirt physically donned by our weird-and-wonderful talisman is actually rather cool. It got me thinking, though, what do you do and where do you go if you’re after football fan gifts that are a little bit out of the ordinary?
It was a question I recently found a few answers to. Faced with the typical Christmas panic and scratching my head for ideas, I found a website that sells personalised football gifts. It took out two birds with one stone, taking care of both my brother and will-be father-in-law. Both are huge footie fans – of Luton Town and West Ham, respectively – so we took the plunge and ordered two football books, one for the Hatter, one for the Hammer. What these tabloid-sized books do is to cover, through reprints of original newspaper reports, the fortunes of a particular club. Coverage is extensive, too – usually starting in the early part of the 20th century and concluding at the end of last season.
Prior to checking out, I took a quick look round the site. There were certainly plenty of other football gifts, particularly if you’re buying for a fan, or fans, of one of the Premier League big boys. Diaries, mugs and calendars are all available, in addition to things like Cup Final DVDs, various prints and spoof newspaper reports. I also noticed stadium tours were available as well. At clubs like Newcastle, for example, there’s even the chance to treat your loved one to a VIP day with their Toon heroes. The fans’ experience includes breakfast, training, a three-course meal and behind-the-scenes access to St James’ Park with a host of former Geordie legends. But the really heartening thing about it all was that stadium tours aside, you don’t have to be a fan of a larger club. Sides from Scotland, the Championship, Leagues One, Two and even the glamorous Blue Square Premier all have gift ideas available through the website.
