Helpful Baby Skin Care Hints for New Parents
Keeping your child’s skin healthy and clean takes more than a simple bath and a little bit of lotion. It involves making sure that all of your baby’s skin stays healthy and clean. This means taking special care of baby’s laundry and sun exposure and properly treating any skin conditions that develop. An adults skin is far tougher than the skin of a baby. Your baby needs your watchful eyes and care to make sure that skin conditions are stopped before they start. The good news is that caring for your baby’s skin is not very complex. You should be able to put together a quality routine early on in your baby’s life. These tips should help you.
During diaper changes skip the powder. Most parents choose to use powder because it will soak up moisture inside of the diaper and keep the baby dry.
Powder, however, is bad because it is easy for babies to inhale it and corn based starches can grow yeast. Instead of using powders or corn starches simply wipe your baby clean with warm water, dry her off with a dry towel and then put on a new diaper. This will keep away diaper rashes and yeast problems. Before giving your son or daughter new toys, clothes or letting him or her sleep on new bedding, make sure everything (except the baby of course) gets washed in gentle and hypoallergenic detergent. Doing this helps cut down on the risk that the new clothes, toys or bedding will irritate your baby’s skin. We do this even as adults because it just makes good sense to do so. Think about it for a second: when was the last time you wore a new shirt without washing it first?
Be careful around your baby’s umbilical cord stump. Don’t pull on it or rub on it. Make sure that you clean it with rubbing alcohol two or three times a day. Don’t mess with it any more than that. Your level of care should be so high that you don’t even give the baby a real bath until after the stump has fallen off. Take care to keep the baby’s diaper away from the stump by folding down its top edge. The stump is very sensitive so you want to make sure that it does not get irritated. The stump will leave behind a spot on your baby–talk to your pediatrician about how to best care for that spot.
There are plenty of methods for practicing proper baby skin care. There is more to proper baby skin care than plain baths. Making sure that you use the correct laundry detergent, using sunscreen and letting your baby get some “naked time” every day are all important parts of proper baby skin care. Don’t fret: you will get used to caring for your baby’s skin in no time. Before you know what has happened all of this will be second nature!
