Twitter Played Vital Role in Saving Lives in Japan during Quake and Tsunami Scare
The Lancet is one of the world’s top medical journals. And it recognized Twitter vital role in saving lives and disseminating information during the calamity that happened in Japan. During the quake on March 11 that has been followed by huge tsunami waves minutes later it knocked telephone lines among other communication infrastructures but internet was left intact.
Right after the disaster responding medical teams first challenge was to look for ways on how to make vital pulmonary hypertension drugs readily available to patients who might need them. The team of doctors from Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo turned into twitter to disseminate information on location where people can get the needed drugs.
TEPCO who is managing Fukushima nuclear power plant also benefited from Twitter service. Right after the disaster TEPCO set up a Twitter account to update people on the damage and condition of the reactors. To date it has already more than 300,000 followers with 80 tweets.
