Relieving Pressure with Acupressure: What is Acupressure?

The modern city life sure has its perks as well as its pressures. While we enjoy the convenience of supermarkets and ATMs, we also have to endure constant pollution and negotiating through endless traffic while haggling through days at work.

Pressure and stress are undesirable effects of this life which we have to inevitably deal with. The question is not so much how to escape it but how we are to deal with it. Many in the medical profession prescribed pills and other intrusive treatments. But others maintain that there must be other, more natural ways to treat something as common as stress.

Fortunately for them, there’s acupressure.

Acupressure began approximately 5,000 years ago and its practitioners have developed its methods ever since. It is the practice of stimulating certain parts of the body that has a natural capacity for self-rejuvenation. Its currency is found in its simple method – that no equipment is necessary to do this other than your own hands.

You don’t even have to go to a professionally trained acupressure therapist to practice this. You can administer this on your own. All you need to do is determine the correct acupressure points.

To understand what acupressure points are, we must first picture our bodies as consisting of channels or meridians that connect the body’s organs together and within these meridians are intersections or intervals. The meridians can be seen as streams of water going through various routes, at times intersecting with one another and at other times building up and passing through narrow canals. Some of these intersections and build-up areas are the pressure points which are the focus of acupressure practice.

Another concept central to the practice of acupressure is the idea that a certain form of energy, often called Chi or Qi, runs through our bodies in the same manner as fuel flows through an automobile’s engines. This can be seen as the very water that courses through the meridian stream and is the very source of the body’s life force.

This stream is the intermediary between the body’s internal and external elements and must continually seek out a sense of balance. Without this balance, we would become more prone to certain maladies and illnesses.

It is through the constant stimulation of the right acupressure points along the body’s meridian stream that we can strive to achieve a natural balance for our bodies. Done the right way, the body’s Chi will course seamlessly through the body’s systems resulting in better health and relief from the stresses that prevail from our everyday pressures. Though it doesn’t really beat all the pollution, traffic and stress, it sure helps keep us relaxed and perhaps consequently, more sane.
