The Dham of Lord Vishnu at Jagannath Puri in Orrisa
Jagannath Puri is one of the Four Dhams on earth, located on the sea side of the Bay of Bengal in the State of Orissa. It is the place abode of the Lord Jagannath or also known as the Lord of the Universe or the Supreme Personality of the Universe.
It is one of the four sacred places of India that includes temples at Rameshwaram, Dwaraka, Badrinath and Puri. It was built by Anantavarman Chodaganga the ruler of Kalinga during the classical temple building phase. The temple is protected by two surrounding walls. The conical tower of the temple is 58 meters high on which the flag and the wheel of Lord Vishnu can be seen.
The food offered to the Lord Jagannath is pure vegetarian and also called as Mahaprasad. Fifty six variety of food is offered to the Lord everyday. The arrangements are made conventionally without onion, garlic, chillies and some other mixture of vegetables. The city of Puri was a center of Buddhist worship in early days before it became a center of Vaishnavism. The Rath Yatra at Puri has its parallel with the chariot procession of the Buddha’s tooth at Dantapuri.
The temple has four chambers in which the outer most chamber is known as Bhagmandir, second is the hall of music and dance called as Natamandir, the next is the Jagamohana – or the mandapa where devotees gather for worship and the finally forth chamber is the sanctum or the Deul enshrining the deities. The city of Puri also has some of the best beaches India where you can enjoy whole day and also you can see beautiful sunrise and sunset.
How to Reach
Jagannath Puri is very much interlinked by road and railway services. It is located on the East Coast Railway having directed express and super fast trains to New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Okha, Ahmedabad and Tirupati. The railway station is located at a distance of just 1 kilometer from the north of the town. The bus stand near the Gundicha Temple provides connections to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack on an interval of 10 to 15 minutes. Direct buses to Kolkata and Visakhapatnam are also available
Nearest airport is located at Bhubaneshwar at a distance of 60 kilometers from Puri. All of the major domestic carriers operate their regular cheap flights from here. International flight facility is not available at the moment. Flights can be booked from any online flight booking web portal.
