Dr. Cobey has worked with Emergency in the past in Afghanistan performing trauma surgery. Now that he has retrained in anesthesia, he is going back overseas in this different professional capacity. “I have always loved working in Africa, and in fact, it was during my time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Chad, Africa in the mid 1990’s that I decided to apply to medical school. Seeing the human need in Chad, I was motivated to find a skill could help me be useful in these kinds of extreme circumstances.” says Fred Cobey.

“Many working in international health may question why Emergency has invested in a cardiac hospital in Sudan, and question if a cardiac hospital is really its greatest need. Certainly, these criticisms are understandable. However, the purpose of this project is to respect human dignity and in doing such, to provide the same quality of care to humans in Sudan as people have in the so called developed world. The message of the hospital and Emergency is that all humans regardless of where they are born are deserving of health care.”
