Your Kid’s Dream Room Starts With New Bedding

Children are unpredictable, you never know what they are going to say next, or who they’re going to say it to. You never know what wild and crazy ideas are running through their minds or where their imagination will take them from day to day. But the one thing you can count on from your kids is that their tastes will change faster than you can prepare for. One day your toddler will being obsessing over Spongebob, relating everything in Spongebob terms and the next day that little yellow cartoon character will be a distant memory, replaced by the likes of Superman, Steve Nash, or Drew Brees.

The ever-changing interests in a child’s life can make it difficult for parents to give their children the room of their dreams. As parents we want to support our children’s interests and foster an environment that is safe, familiar and enjoyable, but the concept of decorating your child’s room around one specific them is enough to make most parents run scared. Your child might beg and plead for Spiderman bed sheets and wallpaper today, but rest assured that it’s only a matter of months before Spiderman becomes too “baby” for them and they want everything redecorated in the latest and greatest video game décor. It’s happened to many a good parent.

So how do you give your child the room of their dreams without committing yourself to one specific trend in your child’s life? The key is in compromise. Start by designing the basics of the room in general terms. The furniture, fixtures, and flooring are all expensive elements associated with any home design or decorating project. Don’t pigeonhole yourself to one specific trend here. Instead paint with broad strokes. Is your boy a sports fan? Go for general sports theme décor such as a ceiling fan and light designed to look like a baseball and bats. Add a basketball hoop to the wall and use wallpaper borders and area rugs that focus on sports in general rather than one specific player or team. Then let your child take control with things like the bedding, posters, and room accents. Let your little fan join in the redecorating fun by choosing the sports bedding he wants, be it general or specific.

As tastes  change kids bedding can be easily replaced or exchanged without costing you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Your child’s tastes are sure to change, but no matter how many phases he goes through in a year you can be sure to keep his room updated and looking cool with a few inexpensive changes. Best of all, if you plan ahead and keep the permanent elements of the room adaptable every time his tastes change you can give him a brand new looking room on a dime store budget.

Of course girls are more difficult when it comes to creating and keeping the perfect room. While boy’s tastes are sure to change some, there are usually permanent interests in their lives (ie. sports, video games, etc.) but when dealing with girls, with changes in age come dramatic changes in taste and style. Some of the most dramatic changes in personality come with puberty. As girls reach the teen years they quickly leave behind their childhood dream worlds and seek to adapt into young adult life. Peer support and acceptance become of the upmost importance to teenage girls. Gone are the fairy tale princess sheets and in their place your girl is going to want stylish teen bedding that reflects their personality and interests. Be prepared for loud colors, crazy fabrics and materials, and a lot of “omg” talk.  But no matter how much your daughter’s interests may change if you follow the general to specific approach to decorating you can always give her the bedroom of her dreams, one that she’ll be proud to spend hours with her boy crazy friends in gossiping and planning their perfect dream weddings.

Whether your child is seven or seventeen you want to provide them with the very best. You can’t give them everything, but with a little careful planning and interchangeable décor you can give them the room of their dreams no matter how their tastes change throughout their life, from Scooby Doo to Seventies Disco, no matter what interests they express you’ll be able to make their room more than a home, you can help make it a personal space and sanctuary where they’ll feel comfortable throughout their childhood.
