Vivid Festival, May 27-June 13
Every year, Sydney is transformed into a city of the arts – complete with lights, music and ideas. Vivid Sydney is a creative festival, which will take over Sydney between May 27 and June 13 this year. It includes huge light projections onto the Sydney Opera House, musical performances from local and international artists and free outdoor exhibitions.
Lights
The light shows will take place throughout the entirety of the festival, at venues around the city. Customs House, in Circular Quay, will be turned into glass, mercury and water by the stunning light display. If you’re looking for something with a little more heat, why not check out FireDance? The dancing flames, which are higher than a three-storey house, are choreographed to music and will be on five times a night for every night of the festival.
Circular Quay will become a gallery by night during the festival with more than 40 light installations taking up residence. Kids and adults alike can interact with the sculptures and you can even make your own artwork with the giant sketchpad on display. But the most popular light show is called Lighting The Sails, when a variety of images, colours and animations are projected onto the sails of the Opera House for a show that is truly unforgettable.
Music
The opportunity to perform at the iconic Sydney Opera House has attracted some big names to the musical line up at Vivid Sydney this year. The timeless venue will host one of the world’s most influential groups – The Cure – on May 31 and June 1. The punk band will perform their first three albums live, in their entirety.
International success story Cut Copy is also set to perform on May 29, performing songs from their new album ‘Zonoscope’. Modernist pop band, Architecture in Helsinki, are playing the set before Cut Copy and are sure to wow crowds with their indie-pop vibe. International acts including Bat For Lashes and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are also among the line-up.
Ideas
Vivid is also a festival of ideas. Discussions, forums and presentations will be held around the city and will involve creative industry professionals as well as creators, innovators and entrepreneurs.
