Wedding plans and getting ready for them!
Is it just me or does everyone seem to be getting married? Wills and Kate seem to have inspired an entire generation of people to get hitched this year. If you are one of the lucky ones, you’re probably drowning in lists, magazine clippings and Excel spreadsheets. Doing a wedding on a budget is no mean feat but it’s definitely possible. Take a look at the few tips below to help you take your dollar further…
Rope in friends and helpful neighbours
Hiring bar staff, waiters and caterers can all add up so try and utilise the services of those around you. Your colleague’s younger brother could make a perfect bartender or the student across the road could help out as a waiter. Even though you will probably have to pay them, chances are they will cost a lot less than professional staff.
Look at alternative venue options
There are no rules when it comes to weddings anymore. Traditional wedding venues can cost a fortune (especially if there is a particularly attractive view) so try and take a look around at other places – like cafes, galleries, antique stores and warehouses – and see if they would suit. It can mean more legwork in terms of decoration and setting up but it might just save you thousands.
Think of your guests
Weddings can be pricey not just for the lucky couple, but also for the people coming to the special day. If people are traveling from out of town, they will probably have to fork out for accommodation. Surry Hills, Paddington and Woolloomooloo have a number of boutique options that could suit your guests at reasonable prices. Better yet, if you speak to them beforehand you can often get a discounted rate if a number of guests from the wedding stay at the same hotel. Darlinghurst, Ultimo and Potts Point are some suburbs that have hidden hotels worth looking into. Better yet, if you speak to them in advance, a lot of hotels will offer a discounted rate if a number of guests from the same wedding stay there.
Thoughtful wedding favours
Most newly-married couples give small gifts to their guests as a token of appreciation. But if you have 100 guests, that can be a lot of extra cash. Hand embroidered napkins (late night TV activity anyone?), photos with personalised notes on the back and homemade shortbread can make cute gifts as well as costing next to nothing.
