Record sales quarter for VW

There are some very positive signs that the automotive industry is finally recovering from the recession hit past few years. In the latest figures released by the Volkswagen Group it reported a record May in terms of sales, with a 16.1% increase in sales from 376,100 in May 2010 to 436,000 in May 2011. It was a solid start to the year for VW too, between January and May it delivered 2.09 million cars to customers.

Christian Klingler, Board Member for Sales and Marketing for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand said, “Our positive trend continued in May and we have posted yet another delivery record.”

The Asia/Pacific region proved to be a growing market for Volkswagen dealers as it has been for other manufacturers too. Between January and May 2011 792,100 vehicles were delivered which is an increase on 2010’s 666,400. In China alone 714,200 VW models were sold this May compared to 619,700 last May.

In the North American market, Volkswagen delivered 194,600 vehicles to customers in the first five months of 2011 compared to 162,600 in 2010. An increase of 32,000 units is very commendable for a struggling market.

The positive sales figures continued in Europe, for the Central and Eastern Europe region, deliveries rose 40.2% to 71,900 units compared to 51,300 units in 2010. In Russia the figures almost doubled, from 17,300 in 2010 to 34,400 this year. In Germany the home market for Volkswagen, deliveries reached 248,800, which is a 3.6% rise over 2010 when sales were reported at 240,000 units.
