Baron and Budd P.C.: What Is Mesothelioma?
A leader in asbestos cancer litigation, Baron and Budd P.C. has successfully represented numerous plaintiffs who have developed health complications from exposure to asbestos. This experienced firm provides the guidance and legal processes needed to help victims of mesothelioma obtain the compensation they may deserve.
The mesothelium is the membrane found covering many of the internal organs in the body. The mesothelium protects the organs by providing a lubricating function. As the lungs expand and contract, for instance, the mesothelium prevents this movement from causing friction against adjacent organs and tissues throughout the body.
In mesothelioma, the cells of this thin membrane begin dividing abnormally, damaging affected organs in the process. This cancer may also metastasize and spread throughout the body. Mesothelioma is still a relatively rare cancer, as approximately 2,000 U.S. cases are diagnosed every year, but the incidence has expanded exponentially over the past 50 years. In many of cases, mesothelioma is caused by working with or around asbestos; although symptoms often do not appear until decades following exposure.
Diagnosing mesothelioma is relatively difficult because the symptoms of the disease resemble those of a number of other diseases. Patients may experience chest pain and shortness of breath; and fluids may build up in the lungs or abdomen. Physicians usually arrive at a provisional diagnosis of mesothelioma through the use of imaging (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs) and lung function tests. In order to confirm this diagnosis, a surgeon or oncologist performs a biopsy.
Unfortunately, mesothelioma is also relatively difficult to treat. Standard procedures include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Among these options, surgery is the most common first step in treatment. To relieve pain, physicians often insert a thin needle into the area of fluid buildup, allowing it to drain. Research into mesothelioma continues to provide new insights into treatment of the disease.
If you, or a loved one, is coping with a recent mesothelioma diagnosis then it is recommended you seek the counsel of a seasoned mesothelioma attorney; like the ones found at the law firm of Baron and Budd.
