A door is not just a door
The humble door almost seems like something not worth writing about. But have you ever stopped to consider just how many different varieties of door there are!?
Here are just a FEW types of door, and we bet there are countless more!
Sliding doors – they do what the name says, slide open and closed, saving space in a room because they do not swing out. Typically they sit on some kind of runners and have small coasters, but there are other more unusual mechanisms too.
Folding doors – there are various different kinds of these, such as bi-folds and concertina doors and they are another great way to save space in the home as they fold neatly up, again, often utilizing some kind of runner system.
Roll-up shutter doors – yes, that’s a kind of door too, you see them commonly on garages or shopfronts (when the shop is closed for the night!). Sometimes these are automated, with an electric motor which winches them up and down.
French doors – these are the kind that usually have two wings that open out. If you think these are only used for exterior doors such as patio doors, then think again. There are also stylish interior French doors available for your home that open up your home and make it seem bigger – especially when you throw open both wings.
Patio doors – since we mention these, they come in a number of types, the French door type as mentioned already, the sliding variety and the folding variety too. What is usually characteristic to these though is that full-height glass that lets as much light in as possible.
Front doors – house front doors are somewhat specific as they serve a security purpose, but are also the first thing people encounter when they come to your home. These typically have some kind of attractive window arrangement using opaque glass, and some kind of application in the wood or PVC that they are typically made of too.
Glass doors – yes, there are also doors made completely of glass, with only the essential fittings such as hinges made of metal. These can look great, but can also look a little chintzy at times. And there are important safety considerations too – these should be made of high-quality safety glass since a breakage could spell disaster and serious injury.
Hinged doors ?- hey, we nearly forgot to mention the humble interior hinged door that every house has. Not only do they give us a little privacy from others in our household, and help stop draughts, they can also give us valuable time to escape in a fire, since closing doors stops a raging fire from getting too much oxygen and might just buy us valuable seconds.
And that’s just the doors we have around the home or workplace. Don’t forget car doors, garden gates or even the catflap – that’s a kind of door too!
Well, that’s just a very short list of the different types of door that you may come across.
