Too many companies only seem to want to help while they’re in the office (9am till 6pm, Monday till Friday usually) and nothing at the weekends. Locate training schools with proper support available at all hours of the day and night (no matter if it’s in the middle of the night on a weekend!) Ensure you get 24×7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not access to a call-in service which takes messages – so you’re parked in a queue of others waiting to be called back during office hours.

It’s possible to find professional companies who offer online direct access support at all times – no matter what time of day it is. Unless you insist on direct-access 24×7 support, you’ll end up kicking yourself. You may not need it throughout the night, but you’re bound to use weekends, early mornings or late evenings.

Ensure all your exams are current and what employers are looking for – don’t even consider courses which lead to some in-house certificate (which is as useless as if you’d printed it yourself). To an employer, only the major heavyweights like Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco (to give some examples) will make the right impression. Anything less won’t make the grade.

Most people don’t even think to ask about something that can make a profound difference to their results – how their company actually breaks down and delivers the physical training materials, and into how many separate packages. Students often think it makes sense (when study may take one to three years to achieve full certification,) for a training company to release one section at a time, until you’ve passed all the exams. Although: Many students find that the trainer’s typical path to completion is not what they would prefer. You may find that it’s more expedient to use an alternative order of study. And what if you don’t get to the end at the pace they expect?

For the perfect solution, you want everything at the start – enabling you to have them all to come back to at any time in the future – as and when you want. You can also vary the order in which you move through the program if you find another route more intuitive.

What is the reason why academic qualifications are less in demand than the more qualifications from the commercial sector? As we require increasingly more effective technological know-how, industry has been required to move to the specialised core-skills learning that the vendors themselves supply – in other words companies like CISCO, Adobe, Microsoft and CompTIA. This frequently provides reductions in both cost and time. Vendor training works through focusing on the actual skills required (along with a proportionate degree of associated knowledge,) instead of covering masses of the background ‘extras’ that computer Science Degrees are prone to get tied up in (because the syllabus is so wide).

As long as an employer is aware what areas they need covered, then they simply need to advertise for a person with the appropriate exam numbers. Syllabuses all have to conform to the same requirements and aren’t allowed to deviate (like academia frequently can and does).
