Cyber-attackers Hijack Twitter Account of Fox News Politics, Post False Messages
Recently, cyber-attackers targeted the Twitter account of Fox News Politics, and tweeted several false messages declaring assassination of President Obama. The fake news claimed that President Obama succumbed to two gun shots. The attackers even posted a congratulatory message for Vice President Joe Biden for appointment as new President of the United States (U.S). Ironically, cyber-attackers planted the fake news on a day when the U.S is celebrating 235th Independence Day. The fake messages were reportedly still visible on the Twitter account of Fox News Politics hours after they first appeared on the site. Cyber-attack group called who identify themselves as “The ScriptKiddies “, have reportedly claimed responsibility for the latest attack. Fox News has acknowledged the incident on its website and is investigating the latest security incident. This is the second such attack on Fox News in as many months. In an earlier incident, Lulz Sec compromised the databases, LinkedIn profiles and Twitter accounts associated with Fox. Lulz Sec followed the attack on Fox, by planting fake news on PBS. While the group declared its dissolution after 50 days of mayhem on the Cyber space, many government and corporate websites are still targeted under an AntiSec campaign.
Such attacks may either aim at gaining instant publicity as well as enticing users to click on links, which lead to malicious websites. Internet users, who click on the links and visit malicious websites, may inadvertently download malware on their computer systems. Alternatively, they may be lured to purchase counterfeit security software. Attackers take advantage of major sporting events, occasions, national holidays, natural disasters and even death news to devise fraudulent schemes and defraud Internet users. Security professionals may enhance their technical know-how and capabilities by leveraging online university degree programs and deal with sophisticated and frequent security threats in the cyberspace.
Hiring professionals qualified in computer science degree and master of security science may help organizations in understanding the risks in the business environment, identifying security threats, initiating corrective measures. Cybercriminals target social media sites as they provide opportunity to target and attract attention of large number of Internet users. The Twitter account of Fox News Politics reportedly had over 30,000 followers. Organizations must also create awareness among users through alerts and advisories. Internet users may also benefit from e-tutorials and online degree programs to improve their understanding of security threats, cyber security tips and best practices and safeguard their computer systems and online accounts from security breach.
