Call Again: Phone Recycling
A lot of people don’t realize the mini-gold mines they have, even their own pockets. Studies have statistically show that roughly 93% of people have no idea that they can recycle their old cell phones and even less know that they can make some side cash for their cache of “Angry Birds” memories. What’s even more amazing is that anybody can make money selling their old phone and they can also help great Mother Earth simultaneously.
How does phone recycling make that possible? Cell phones, amongst other electronics, are taking up 70% of landfill space, despite being only 2% of the garbage (an estimated total of 500 million devices). Within these cell phones lie minute, but still very harmful, amounts of heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic. Responsibly recycling prevents these materials from seeping out into the environment. Finally, as precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, etc.) become harder to mine, the processes become less eco-friendly. Each and every day, it makes a lot more sense to simply use what we already have.
Mobile phone recycling has a fairly simple business model: within old cell phones (and most electronics) lie minute amounts of precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, titanium, and copper). Companies are able to safely and efficiently mass collect these elements through a process called surface mining. They also refurbish new phones from old parts, and then sell these “Phone chimeras” to emerging consumers in developing countries. The individuals that make money often do so by mass collecting phones from family and friends. They also become affiliates of new companies simply trying to get the word out that this industry exists.
Phone recycling is lucrative, robust, and environmentally effective. Stop talking.but keep talking!
