Economical convertibles
When the sun is shining and the birds are tweeting there’s nothing more satisfying than to jump in you convertible and cruise around country lanes soaking up the sunrays. Driving an open-top car in the summer is one of motoring’s finest pleasures.
But unless you already have a convertible, which car is the best one to get if you also want to be a bit green? Getting a car which is fuel efficient is both better for the environment and for your wallet.
One of the more economical choices is the Saab 9-3 1.9 TTid Convertible which emits only 137g/km of CO2 but still produce a staggering 160phb. Combined driving will give you around 54.3 mpg.
Another good choice is the Renault Megane CC which has an automatic gearbox but still gives you a fuel economy of 56.6 mpg with mixed driving and carbon emissions as low as 130g/km.
Even more impressive than these two who place 9th and 10th on the list of most economical convertibles currently on the market is the Mini Convertible 1.6D which places in third spot. It might be a car more suited for shorter trips and city sunning but it gives you 70.06 mpg with mixed driving and the CO2 emissions are as low as 105g/km.
Beating the Mini to second place is the popular and classy Fiat 500C 0.9 TwinAir which only emits 95g/km of CO2.Combined driving gives you a fuel economy of 68.9 mpg. It might not be a full open top like some other convertibles but with numbers like that, it’s hard to resist.
Top spot however goes to the Smart Fortwo 0.8 cdi which only emits 86g/km of CO2 and has a mixed fuel economy of 85.6 mpg. Like the Fiat 500 it has a folding canvas roof rather than a full open top but if you want an environmentally friendly and economical convertible, this is the best there is.
If you on the other hand want to try something like the Renault, Southampton is one place you should find a dealership able to help.
