Thirsty cars
Getting good value for money when buying a new car is probably what most potential car buyers have on their minds. And good value these days where fuel prices are sky high, tend to imply an economical and fuel efficient car. But although you may think you can spot a gas guzzler a mile off it’s not always as easy as you think.
The obvious thirsty culprits are of course the large SUVs or cars with massive V8 engines but there are cars of all shapes and sizes that perform less than satisfactory at the fuel pumps.
One such example is the Citroen C3, a small car with a small engine but it only does 47.9 mpg and that’s not much for a 1.1-litre, 61bhp engine. Another thirsty Frenchman is the Renault Megane 1.6. This front-wheel drive family hatchback only delivers around 41.5 mpg. But it does beat the popular Ford Mondeo as their 2.0-litre petrol engine only does around35.8 mpg and also emits a massive 184g/km of CO2. Another popular car which also is particularly thirsty is the Mazda MX-5. The 1.8-litre roadster only delivers 124bph and should by comparison be a bit more frugal. It’s not. It only does 39.8 mpg and emits 167g/km of CO2.
So before you fall in love with a make and model make sure you check out the figures and that you can afford the cost the model you’ve chosen involves. Sometimes it might be worth paying out more up front for a different engine size or perhaps a diesel version as a more frugal vehicle can be more economical to own in the long run. And this advice goes whether you’re looking at new or used cars. Basingstoke is one area where you will find both.
