A small mental tissue is surgically implanted inside the oysters and left in rivers, ponds, lakes or sea to grow naturally. Pearl farms keep check on the growth of the pearls but have no control over the growth as it is a natural process and totally depends on water and climatic conditions.
Cultured pearls are of different types. There is the Japanese pearl, freshwater pearls, and salt water pearls. Akoyo and Mikimoto are types of Japanese pearls, which are small in size and come in the colors of white, cream, gold and even rose. On the other hand, freshwater pearls are cultured in fresh water. They are grown in mussels and oysters. Freshwater pearls not only have different colors, shapes and sizes but they also differ in nacre, luster and surfaces. Salt water is another type of cultured pearl which is cultured in saltwater and grown in oysters. Saltwater pearls produce more colors other than the usual ones as silver, yellow and black.
