Bellows material are generally thin and it can dent easily so there are some protective covers available which are meant to prevent such damage, but for many flanged designs, they must be removed to install bolts – thus the occasional wrench slip dent. In general most of the people says that shift is the damage for this problem. Shallow dents in any aspects do not cause a significant enough reduction in the bellows life cycle to require replacements and don’t accept them on a new part from a supplier, but live with them if they occur in the field. Sharp dents will reduce the cycle life and remember that the sharper the dent, sooner the fatigue crack will form as the bellows flexes. This could quickly lead to a failure of the bellows, so you need to be very careful to avoid this kind of damage.
Scratches and arc-strikes is the other reason for the bellows to get damage and remember that as long as a scratch or arc strike does not remove, more than 10% of the metal bellows or expansion joints material thickness can just sand and buff it out. It may even be little more and it depends on the scratches so if you can, catch your fingernail in a scratch and it should be sanded out.
