What is it about Top Gear?
Top Gear is one of the most watched television programs in the world with an estimated global audience of 350 million people. It has been running since 1977 and has won BAFTA and Emmy awards. So why does a program about cars appeal to so many people around the globe?
Presenters
The relationship between the show’s three presenters is a key part of the show’s success. Jeremy Clarkson, an old hat in the world of automotive journalism, has a long-standing reputation as a controversial TV personality and isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers with his opinions. Richard “The Hamster” Hammond, famed for his near fatal crash in a jet car, adds another dimension to the trio and is often mocked by Clarkson for his small stature and use of teeth whitener. James May, aka Captain Slow, contributes a ‘grumpy old man’ quality to the program.
The Stig
The unidentified race car driver is a vital part of both the program’s format and appeal. He or she wears a full racing suit, including a full-face helmet, and no one has seen The Stig’s face before. They are responsible for setting as-fast-as-possible lap times for cars tested on the program.
Location
The main show is filmed at an old airport hangar in Surrey, England. But a greatly increased budget means the show has been able to do a series of editions in countries around the world, filming in America, Iraq, Afghanistan and Iceland among others. They have yet to film a program in Australia but brought their Top Gear Live show to our shores earlier this year, which featured some of their usual segments like The Cool Wall and the driving of modified used cars. Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Sydney and Hobart unfortunately missed out on an appearance.
Challenges
The presenters compete in regular challenges, often with the tag line: “How hard can it be?” They are often ridiculous stunts, like trying to get a car into space, turning a people-mover into a convertible and attempting to drive on water. It’s all just an average day in the office for the Top Gear guys.
