Big events on the London horizon

London is a thriving, vibrant metropolis with more things to see and do than you could possibly imagine. Every day, there are loads of gigs, shows, and sports events taking place, which means that you are never short of options. Here are some of the most important events taking place in the capital over the coming year

The 2012 Olympics

In the summer of 2012, Londons East End will be swamped with visitors to the biggest event on the sporting calendar, the Summer Olympics. While the initial release of tickets have already been allocated, it is still possible to buy tickets from third party suppliers. As well as the games themselves, there are going to be some massive parties going on in the city put together by the participating nations, so it should be fun regardless of whether you see any sport or not.

Wimbledon Tennis Championships

The most famous tennis championship in the world takes place on an annual basis in London. Here, you can see all of the biggest stars of the game, including Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Andy Murray. This iconic sporting event attracts over five hundred thousand spectators, who convene to support players from over 60 countries play on the grass courts of the All England Club.

Notting Hill Carnival

This is a massive Afro Caribbean parade that happens in the trendy Notting Hill district in August. It has grown exponentially in size since the 1960s, with over 20 miles of colourful costumes, 40 static sound systems, a huge steel band contest, lots of fantastic performances by musicians and dancers, and thousands of market stalls serving up delicious food and selling trinkets. Last years carnival attracted over one million revellers from around the world, and even more are expected this year.

Christmas in London

London certainly does not do Christmas by halves, with giant Christmas trees and the most amazing Christmas lights you will ever see. In addition, there is plenty to see and do, including funfairs, circuses, parades, and lots of other fun events for the entire family. The more foolhardy among you might fancy a swim in the Serpentine ponds in Hyde Park along with lots of other nutcases on Christmas day, or there is always the option of doing a 5K fun run in a santa costume in Greenwich Park.

Hard Rock Calling At Hyde Park

This massive open-air rock concert is held in Hyde Park every summer, and has seen some very big names grace its stage in recent years including Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney.
