Crossovers – what’s the difference between £30k?

In the slightly confusing world of the crossover car choice is rife, so it’d important to have a strong feeling about what you want to pick up for you money, after all, these things don’t come cheap.

Like any other type of car, price ranges wildly depending on what manufacturer floats your boat. If you’re looking for a sporty, luxury crossover with a name badge that’s going to turn heads (for good and for bad) then you can’t go far wrong with Porsche’s infamous Cayenne. Named after a fiery-hot pepper, the Cayenne is arguably Britain’s spiciest crossover dish, with the GTS 4.8-litre V8 version achieving north of 145mph in ridiculous comfort. The Cayenne Turbo tops even that, rocketing to 171mph if you have the guts to open the taps to the fullest. Obviously this is all well and good, but not everyone has £76,000 to spend on a crossover car – especially when it looks like the 911’s fat uncle.

Mazda’s CX-7 is a good shout for around £24,000, and while it’s a good performer with good space and practicality, you wouldn’t seriously expect Cayenne performance. Still 0-60 in eight seconds and a top-end of 130mph should be enough to satisfy anyone looking to buy a crossover car.

Then we come to the Volvo XC70. Strangely, over the last five years Volvo has become somewhat of a style icon, ditching the ultimately drab boxyily-styled cars and gone all trendy on us. They’re practical too. The XC70 boasts three diesel versions and a petrol to keep things interesting, with the latter being made up of a 3.0-litre, six-speed, 281bhp beast. You won’t be needing for storage either – and it looks great.

The XC70 embodies all that has made Volvo the worldwide leader in premium wagons. It combines unparalleled versatility, longevity, comfort and handling without compromising Volvo’s long tradition of quality, advanced safety design and durability. The XC70’s burly good looks and all-weather capability has reinvented the way people look at wagons. Designed from the beginning to appeal to the rugged individual in all of us, the Volvo XC70 is a perfect fit for those seeking the ultimate active-lifestyle vehicle.

What’s the difference between £30k? Not a lot unless you’re a sucker for posh badges.
