The Magic of Amber Jewelry
A gift that dates back millions of years and that will be loved for a long time. In fact as you probably realize, amber is fossilized tree resin and has been used in jewelry (and medicine) for several thousands of years. Amber is typically yellow-orange in colour but there are also red varieties and a blue one which are very rare. The exact color depends a lot on the species of plant that created the resin. Amber can also be clear, nearly transparent or very opaque and containing impurities, occasionally even whole insects! One of the main varieties of amber is called Baltic anber and is approximately 45 million years old and comes from Russia and the Baltic countries. To show off this great quantity of amber there was even an entire room in a palace near St Petersburg in Russia, completely built of amber and gold. Unfortunately it was looted and destroyed by the Nazis and its content lost to this day.
Amber has also been used to make perfumes and scents, although these days it is more likely to be made with a mixture of other chemicals than with actual amber. Amber gemstones have beautiful colors that will go well with both silver and gold, although most people will prefer silver as it offers a better contrast. Depending on the budget, you will have, you can choose between reconstituted amber or amber from a Baltic or Dominican ambermine, the price and the quality of the investment will vary a lot. There are two problems when buying amber jewelry: the first is that it is really fragile so it has to be set properly by someone with experience and amber earrings and necklaces might be a wiser idea as they would less exposed potential damages than rings and bracelets. The other thing to watch out for is fake amber, real amber smells of pines and trees when even slightly stroked and heated up and will float in salted water. Amber made of plastic will not.
