The Rap Breakdown

Rap has always been a top selling genre. This new generation in Hip Hop isn’t in the same boat though. Now it isn’t as common to see an overall #1 Rap album on the charts. There is a lot of speculation for the reason that this is consistently happening. The internet is only one of the main reasons and it isn’t fully responsible. Read on to see another huge reason for the sales dropping.

If you examine top songs today and the top songs of the golden era, you will see that the quality of the content in Hip Hop is declining. There is little experimentation going on right now in the Rap world. Up until 2000, Hip Hop was at the top and the music quality was pristine. Today, Hip Hop has lost its innovation and in turn, lost many dedicated fans. Is this totally the fault of the rap artists? Is there nothing left to say on a Hip Hop song? Now, almost every popular artist and song is just generic. This has created less of a demand for new Hip Hop albums.

The internet has basically killed Hip Hop album sales. The internet has produced a huge amount of illegal acquisition of Rap music. This may be the number one reason that Hip Hop sales consistently decline. Why pay when you can get it free? Piracy is a huge problem to music sales, not just the Rap genre.

What effect does this all have on Rap music? Many popular record labels are now losing their artists and going bankrupt. Artists are making less money per album so they are cranking out lower quality albums at a faster rate. Upcoming artists don’t do very well unless they follow whoever is popular at the moment. The quality of music, in the golden age for example, is nowhere to be found. The less creative the music gets, the less people will go out and buy a new album. It is a vicious circle.

So what can be done to stop this from continuing? Piracy may be hindered but it can’t be stopped. If the true artists start selling major units again, more artists will be inclined to produce good music again. We may even be able to create the 2nd golden age. Hopefully, something can be done before Rap is dead altogether.
