Close-fought races

Close-fought races loomed in Colorado as Democratic U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet battled for his job Tuesday in a primary against Andrew Romanoff, a former state House speaker whose grassroots campaign and embrace of the nation’s anti-establishment mood has him within striking distance of an upset.

Mr. Bennet, appointed last year to fill the seat vacated when Ken Salazar become Interior Secretary, faced the possibility of being the third senator this year to fail to win his party’s nomination, after Sens. Bob Bennett (R., Utah), and Arlen Specter (D., Pa.) The race was too close to call in advance polling.free game

Republicans in the state had their own outsider-versus-insider Senate story line. Former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton, endorsed by most sitting GOP senators, faced Ken Buck, a rural prosecutor who depicted Ms. Norton as too cozy with the Washington establishment.

In the governor’s race, Republicans were choosing between former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis and businessman Dan Maes, who was a virtual unknown until a plagiarism scandal broke involving Mr. McInnis. Mr. McInnis has apologized to voters for lifting part of a judge’s work in 2005 for a series of essays on water rights. He has blamed a research assistant, who has denied responsibility, and has given back the $300,000 he was paid for the essays.
