House Development – Touching Up Strategies For Concrete Floors
Most homes that have a garage or basement do have concrete floors. These can be easily finished by painting rather than any other more expensive treatments. You paint your concrete floors not only for aesthetic purposes but also for practical reasons as it makes the floor easier to clean and more durable in the long run. If painting is carried out correctly, your concrete floor can last for many years.
How to Begin:
This is not a very expensive home renovation project but it is not something that is done overnight either. First, you have to make sure that your floor is absolutely dry prior to starting your painting project. If you notice wet spots, especially from the basement, it is better to consult a professional first to fix that seepage problem.
Once you have determined that your floor is and will remain completely dry you will need to scrub your concrete to be sure that there is no residue of any chemicals, like grease on the floor. This is important especially if the floor is in your garage or shop area. This is significant because the paint would not be able to adhere completely in the presence of any foreign material.
Actually, scrubbing the floor is a big step and if there is any type of grease on the floor, some kitty litter will absorb most of it. Next step is to scrub the floor with the use of Goof Off and then rinse it afterward. Now scrub with a mixture of TSP. Now it will take several rinses until you can mop and have the mop remain clean. After scrubbing the floor needs to dry for at least three days to be sure it is thoroughly dried and ready to paint.
Before painting, more prepping is needed:
If there are any bumpy areas on the floor’s surface or residue paint you will need to use a sander and some 80-grit paper to remove any old stuff that is stuck to the floor and make it smooth again. Remove any sanding residue that the vacuum misses with the use of a tack clothe.
Take time also to repair any visible cracks. Use Cement Fixall to plug these cracks or little holes and be sure to let it dry thoroughly.
Now you are finally ready to start painting!
First you will need two applications of a stain blocker and primer like Kilz. Remember that the surface must be completely dry in between the two applications. After that, you may now paint the floor using your chosen top quality latex paint. A paint compressor or roller may be necessary for a fine painting job.
Accessorizing your painted floor:
At this juncture, if you wish you may add some designs like geometric shapes or faux stone to make the floor look even more beautiful. You can express your creativity at this point, just making sure the floor is allowed to dry thoroughly before finishing.
How to finish your newly-painted concrete floor:
You will need a quarter inch nap roller and two applications of Breakthrough sealer to finish your floor. Take precautions by wearing a respirator mask as fumes are expected when doing this. Allow the floor to thoroughly dry for one final time.
Now your floor is complete. You may want to use an area rug or some throw rugs as it is still concrete. Only difference is that you may now proudly claim that it’s already a beautiful concrete!
