Why Students Look Online for Deals

Every year nearly half a million students start new courses at UK universities. Frequently young people intent on higher education relocate to new, unfamiliar cities to study, armed with seemingly disposable student loans and spare time.

Students are regularly eligible for discounts, and understandably go in search of the best money saving deals available. Most large high street stores offer a student discount, even if it’s short-term, and increasingly Internet retailers are following suit.
Often shops will have promotions not directed exclusively towards students that will not go unnoticed – restaurants are a great example of this, where discounts are frequently offered in daytime hours when students are looking for a place to eat. Eateries offering 2 for £10 or a beer and a burger before tea time are favourite student haunts, as are bars with drinks offers available at night time hours.

Regardless of whether a promotion is aimed solely at students or not, the important task for the retailer is making people aware it exists. Traditional methods such as billboards, flyers and word of mouth marketing are still employed; however it is becoming easier and quicker to reach large numbers of people online. With each generation more computer literate than the one preceding, young people in particular are likely to look for bargains online.

With a popular British broadsheet newspaper stating that it is likely the Internet economy will grow by 10% annually for the next five years, it seems probable that people will increasingly view the Internet as the best place to find great deals on everything from food to clothing to electronics.

Most high street shops, regardless of size, now have an online presence, even if it’s just a website; today over half the first page results of a quick search have physical shops on the high street; and there are new and popular channels to promote more traditional brick and mortar stores springing up online.

The advent of social media has provided a great platform for companies and individuals to market themselves with little cost involved, with a sizeable portion verging on a majority of most social networks’ member bases consisting of younger people. Networking sites are really the tip of the iceberg when it comes to innovative ways to get noticed online, but it appears that taking the deals to students in this kind of way is the most effective way of attracting their business.
