Top Tips to Buying Used Camera Lenses
It is important to use caution if you are planning to buy used camera lenses for your DSLR. Of course, we all want the best lenses. For those who can afford new ones then good for you. However, for those who can’t really afford one or who prefer to stick to second hand lenses then you should not just buy one impulsively. You should consider a few factors to ensure a positive buying and using experience.
Since used camera lenses are the cheaper option, here are tips that can help you go about the buying process:
1. If you see scratches & dents on its outer casing, that’s okay. Keep in mind that sturdy professional lenses are built to last and to be used. The marks you see are just indications that they’ve been used a lot. So regardless of the appearance, they may still have a few more years to prove themselves.
2. When testing the lenses, switch to manual focus and then twist the focusing ring back & forth. This way, you can listen to any grinding noises. You may also need to look out for any gritty feeling. If you notice the ring not moving freely, you may end up with focusing problems.
3. To check for noises from the mechanics of the lens or motor, you should switch the lens to autofocus. You should check if the camera is not struggling to focus.
4. Check the lens mount’s contacts if there are excessive wear n’ tear. Also look for scratches that may indicate rough handling whenever you mount the lens.
5. Examine the outer side of the lens if there are indications that it has been dropped. If ever, you’ll find serious dents on it. You should also take out the filter just to see if the lens has uneven edges. Do some test shots to examine them. If the shots are out of focus, this would mean that the lens has been dropped.
6. Check if there are dust or dirt accumulating on the internal elements.
7. Check the rear and front elements for scratches. Take note that the rear is more important than the front.
These are just a few buying tips for used camera lenses. Keep in mind that even if you’re just buying a used camera lens, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s of low quality already or it would break soon. There are still lenses that are in good condition even if they’re used already. Previous owners may have other reasons why they are selling them like they prefer to get a new one. You ma also ask the seller why he or she is selling her used camera lenses already.
