Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a disease caused by major nerve of vision, which is called as the optic nerve. The main function of this optic nerve is to receive light impulses generated from retina to transmit these to the brain to recognize those electrical signals as vision. Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by progressive damage to the optic nerve that generally begins with a subtle loss of side vision. If glaucoma is not diagnosed and treated, it can progress the loss of peripheral vision further to loss of central vision and blindness.
Causes of Glaucoma
Glaucoma generally related with elevated pressure in the eye known as intraocular pressure but not all the time. This elevated eye pressure leads to damage of the optic nerve result in loss of side vision and if care is not taken properly it may leads to blindness. Sometimes it may occur in normal eye pressure due to poor regulation of blood flow to the optic nerve is also known as Glaucoma.
Types of Glaucoma
There are many different types of glaucoma like open-angle Glaucoma that are usually conditions of long duration is known as chronic Glaucoma, or angle-closure Glaucoma which is also referred as closed angle glaucoma, which include conditions occurring both suddenly (acute) and over a long period of time (chronic). The glaucomas usually affect both eyes, but the disease can progress more rapidly in one eye than in the other. Involvement of just one eye occurs only when the glaucoma is brought on by factors such as a prior injury, inflammation, or the use of steroids only in that eye.
