The Best Home Cinema Systems
A Buyers Guide to Home Cinema Systems
If you love your films and TV dramas, home cinema systems can help take your viewing experience to a whole new level. While you won’t get the exact same experience as if you were sitting in the cinema, you will be able to enjoy full surround sound and a crystal clear picture on a large home screen – making that 3 hour filmathon a much more exhilarating and nail-biting experience.
What is a Home Cinema System?
A home cinema system typically consists of a receiver, DVD player/recorder, sub-woofer and mini satellite speakers. To create a cinematic surround sound experience, a low frequency base from the subwoofer combines with the mini speakers which are placed in different corners around the room. This puts you right in the middle of the sound rather than having it come from just one direction, and this creates a ‘3D’ sound.
Types of Speakers
Different kinds of home cinema systems are available containing different numbers of speakers. Generally speaking, the more speakers you have, the more realistic your audio will be. The different sound channels available are 2.1, 5.1 and 7.1, whereby the first number indicates the amount of speakers and the second number accounts for the subwoofer:
2.1 – 2 front speakers plus subwoofer. Suitable for providing surround sound in a small room.
5.1 – 3 front speakers, 2 rear speakers plus subwoofer. Provide a cinema-like surround sound experience.
7.1 – 3 front speakers, 2 rear speakers, subwoofer plus 2 extra speakers directly to the left and right of the listener. Ideal set up for large rooms.
Types of DVD Players
A home cinema system will come with either a DVD or Blu-ray player. Before you buy a system, it’s helpful to fully understand the difference between the two:
DVD Players – Any regular DVD or pre-recorded disk used with a home cinema systems DVD player will benefit from surround sound audio. The majority of DVDs have a 5.1 soundtrack, although even a 2.1 system will provide fantastic audio quality.
Blu-Ray – Blu-ray players take things to the next level and allow you to watch filmes in high definition with an HDTV. All new DVDs are released in blu-ray format, meaning that never before have we been able to watch films at home in such high detail.
3D Blu-Ray Players
If HD Blu-ray wasn’t good enough, now you can watch films in 3D. To watch films in 3D, a 3D TV is required. 3D home cinema systems are becoming more and more commonplace and 3D TV’s are beginning to find their way into living rooms across the country.
Wireless Speakers
Some home cinema systems now contain wireless Bluetooth speakers, which can be very useful if you want to move your speakers around and reposition them. Also, if you hate having cables all over the place, you can kiss those annoyances goodbye.
