Crossover SUV – a quick look at market favourites

Crossover SUV cars have been growing in popularity over the last few years thanks to their level of practicality and sporty lines. Many people chose them over estate cars because they have similar cabin space and comfort for passengers, but provide a higher driving position and a sportier look than their stretched-out rivals.

Here we take a quick look at a few of the market’s best over the last couple of years…

BMW X6

The famed X5 has now been around for 12 years and in that time BMW has shifted close to a gazillion units. The X6, looks wise, is a refreshing change from its relatively chunky big brother and the best thing is it can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. You’re after a slick-looking sporty number? No problem. You fancy a sporty 4×4 look-at-me affair? It’s yours, too. A bit of a Marmite car but with high performance, high refinement and great looks it’s easy to see why it’s been a success.

Audi Q5

German efficiency at its best, with a punchy engine, typical Audi minimalist styling and a cabin you could spend your lunch break in. The top spec 3.0litre TDI model is no slouch either, hitting 62mph from standing in just 6.5seconds and hitting a top speed of 139mph if you open the taps. If space, performance and good looks are your thing there isn’t a lot out there to beat – especially at £15k cheaper than an X6.

Volvo XC90

As Jeremy Clarkson would testify to, the XC90 is a very good crossover SUV. As you would expect from Sweden’s least boring mainstream car manufacturer it’s put together fantastically well and looks great, too. The current model boasts a 2.4litre diesel engine that will get you to 60mph from the lights in 10.3seconds and carry on to 127mph if you just so happen to be driving on the autobahn for a bit. A very solid choice.
