A quick guide to sports wagons

Sports wagons, performance estates, ‘long fast cars’, call them what you will, but there has been some fantastic examples of them over the past couple of years.

Offering hair-raising performance and killer cabin and boot space, current sports wagon offerings are as good as they’ve ever been – and they look great, too.

Here’s a few examples of some personal favourites from the last couple of years…

Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon

Unmistakably Alfa, the 159 Sportwagon is stunning to look at but suffers in the practicality stakes when compared to some others in its class. Reliability issues are, as ever, bound to rear their irritating head from time-to-time, but decent performance and killer bodywork make this Italian stallion well worth a punt.

Peugeot 407 SW

The jury is out as to whether this car is actually good looking or not, but if you’re a fan of sweeping lines and glass roofs you’re probably on to a winner with Peugeot’s offering to the sports wagon table. The standard 1.6litre engine is far from mind blowing, and there is certainly a bit of style over substance going on, but the 407 is a solid choice for people looking for a bit of continental class.

Audi RS6 Avant

In the world of autmotive oxymorons the RS6 must surely be king. The V10 twin turbo power unit produces north of 570bhp, whilst the vast boot space will happily swallow a whole herd of something wild. Think of it as a barn with afterburners.

Volvo V60

An unlikely head turner, the V60 represents just how far the Swedish manufacturer has come in the last 10 years. With sleek lines, lavish interior and enough storage to empty a cash & carry into, the V60 is certainly one to consider when choosing your next sports wagon.
