The origin of “Gajanan Books” dates back to year 1929, when Shri Harilal Chhotalal Thakkar laid the foundation of “Gajanan Pustkalaya”. For a few years after its establishment, the company functioned as a books vendor but soon it forayed into the field of publication of education books and other subjects like Gujarati recipe books, vastu shashtra book and religious books. The company holds the record for publishing more than 1500 books in Gujrati, Hindi, English and Marathi and is a renowned and widely recognised company in the entire Gujarat. Gajanan Books Publishers are a premier Books Publishing Company and its structure and existence is nothing but a manifestation of the core values and principles of its founder.

Shri Harilal Chhotalal Thakkar was a man with a vision and a passion for reading. Born in Surat in 1809, he completed his education in 1929 and in that year itself established “Gajanan Pustkalaya”. For a major part of his life he remained busy in the reading and analysis and spreading of different varieties of literature. Apart from pioneering the publication works, he had his calling in carrying out major philanthropic and other humanitarian activities meant at the upliftment of the poor and the weak. He established night schools, associations and various other utilities for the betterment of the poor families. In 1950, he established the “Ghoghari Lohana Mahajan” and symbolized hard work and charity. He breathed his last on December 29, 1986 and the sad demise of Shri Thakkar left the society aggrieving. His six daughters and two sons were entrusted the task of carrying forward his legacy and currently his son Shri Viyaybhai Thakkar is taking the name of Gajanan Books to new levels of popularity, even outside Gujarat.
