New Sadler’s Wells show has plenty of sole

New Sadler’s Wells show has plenty of sole
FROM the humble Ugg boot to the towering Jimmy Choo, shoes are every woman’s obsession.

But now that obsession is being taken out of women’s dressing rooms and into the public arena as Sadler’s Wells – the country’s leading dance house – stages an entire show in homage to the sandal, the stiletto and the slipper.

Shoes: A Show With Legs uses song and dance to explore the gamut of footwear – from the highs of the Louboutin to the lows of the Croc.

Richard Thomas, the co-writer of West End hit Jerry Springer – The Musical, has written and composed Shoes for Sadler’s Wells in Rosebery Avenue, Ugg Boots Deutschland Finsbury.

He said: “If you ask anyone to pick out the most significant pair of shoes in their lifetime, you will hear as much about personal memories and emotions as you will about brands.

“The common factor seems to be joy. So Shoes is about joy – searching for it, finding it and losing it.”

The production features 12 dancers, four singers, one live band, and 250 pairs of shoes – all directed by award-winning Mary Poppins choreographer Stephen Mear.

With songs such as Health And Safety, Desire: The Brand, and Imelda Argues With The Nation, the musical numbers are sure to provoke more than a wry smile.

Leading choreographers, such as Jesus Christ Superstar’s Aletta Collins and Zero Degree’s Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui are helping draw up the moves, and, if all else fails, there are always the shoes – from designers such as Terry de Havilland, Manolo Blahnik, LK Bennett, Christian Louboutin and Alexander McQueen – to gawp at.

Alistair Spalding, chief executive and artistic director of Sadler’s Wells, said: “When I first envisioned Sadler’s Wells to become a producing house, I hoped to support works that brought in artists from other disciplines who could exploit dance’s incredible versatility. Shoes embodies that aim.”

Shoes: A Show With Legs is showing from September 3 to 11.
